How to Create Effective Landing Pages

January 22, 2009 | by Joseph Manna

Many people believe that they require a Webmaster to build them a landing page. While a full-time Webmaster is totally awesome for long-term needs like full Web sites, frequent updates and additional design and implementation; they aren’t necessary for three minute landing pages.

The goal in building a landing page is to deliver results. The results could be anything from a simple opt-in to your marketing, collection of additional lead information all the way to a sale. A landing page directly contributes to results because it connects with the audience in less than eight seconds. In those eight seconds, you had better identify with them emotionally as well as provide some logical means of continuing to view your landing page. The purpose of a landing page is to minimize friction and anxiety and to emphasize the value and incentive to use your product or service.

By leveraging a partner of ours, Squarespace, you can create and manage landing pages very quickly. A landing page could be built in as little as three minutes. Additionally, a full Web site could be easily make it out to market in less than 30 minutes. This is cool because anyone (even your parents) could probably figure out how to setup their own landing page or nifty personal Web site. Squarespace starts out at $8 a month, which is something almost anyone can afford even during these economic times.

    Landing Pages…

Tips that I could offer?…. Thank you for the vote of confidence! Well, you have already covered the main 11 points…

I would add a number 12…. Use N.L.P. (Neural Linguistic Programming) in your scripting… We all have slightly different “Buy Strategies”, depending on our primary Communications Modality…. Visual, Auditory, Auditory Digital & Kinesthetic… One of the main factors in constructing your Landing page is that the last modality we use before “Buying” is our “Kinesthetic” modality…. So appeal to “Feelings”, “Emotions” with the Call to Action….. (Call (Auditory) to Action (Kinesthetic)).. And make sure you use all the other 3 Modalities in your scripting prior to that “Call to Action”….

“The facts have proven and shown and I have heard from most of the experts, that when you see, and hear clearly, what I am saying you will feel good about what I am asking you to do!”

That’s just a short statement with all of the Major Communications Modalities used. It takes some practice but it can help….

Also, last point…. is to TEST, TEST, TEST….

    How do you TEST?

Not an easy question to answer… I actually use several “Traffic Generation Sites” for testing new Landing Pages and Scripting… WORD of CAUTION… I would not recommend these sites to actually generate traffic… These sites are not “Targeted Visitors” to your site…. They blindly “Surf” to gain bonuses to obtain traffic for their sites… The are the least likely to actually take you up on your call to action….

My rational on using them to test is this… If I can get people to actually click through on my Call to Action on these sites,,,, there is a much higher probability that I actually got everything right, and the landing page is ready for posting…

2nd Word of warning…. And I have no real proof on this but, I believe that “If” you generate too many visits from this type of traffic, your site will have a negative impact on rating by Google… Keep in mind the primary reason for using this is to TEST….

The second level of testing after that is the use of “Google Ads” directed to that Landing page…

Just some thoughts… I hope they help others…

Putting the information capture above the fold is a sound decision to increase conversions. Adding a video is another tried and tested recipe for success.
