I recently went on a vacation with my family to the New York/New Jersey area to visit my folks and take my kids to the ‘shore’ (what we call the beach back East) and take in a couple Broadway shows. The flight from Phoenix to JFK in New York was packed. Not a seat untaken. Before we left they were trying to bribe people to get off the flight for $400 and a guaranteed seat on the next flight.
When we arrived in JFK, the airport was packed! We got picked up by my brother and transported to my parent’s house in New Jersey. The next day we went to the beach and boardwalk in Seaside, New Jersey, and it was packed. All the rides were full, all the shops were full, and there were probably about 25,000 people.
The next day we went to New York City and visited the Museum of Modern Art….and it was packed! At $30 per head. You had hardly any have time to see some of the most important paintings ever made because of the throng of people. We decided to have lunch at the museum, and….you guessed it….it was packed. We had to wait an hour to have lunch, which by the way was $150 for four people.
Later that evening we went to see ‘Hair’ on Broadway. At $140 a ticket…and it was packed, not a seat left vacant. After it was over we tried to have dinner in the city, but at 10pm all the restaurants were packed with an hour or more of a waiting list.
The next day we went to a super large mall in New Jersey. It was…..packed! We had to park in the overflow lot and walk about 400 yards to the mall entrance. Inside was a mob scene. My daughter bought a purse at the Coach store, on sale at $199, and it took nearly a half hour to get it rung up, the line was that long.
Over and over during my trip, I saw this same kind of thing. All the restaurants were packed, long lines of people happily spending money. So I ask you: Where is the recession?
If you have been using the recession as an reason for falling sales and profits, you’ve got to find another reason, because tons of money is being spent on products and services. Likely, the kind your small business provides. Believing in the recession becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy. You pull back on marketing because you believe people are not spending, and that’s what happens. Your sales and profits go down. Think positive, your business needs it.
