Winter Release: eCommerce Enhancements for Small Businesses

February 22, 2010 | by Joseph Manna

InfusionsoftIn our Winter Release that we told you about earlier, we mentioned a number of ecommerce enhancements. In this entry, you’ll learn more about these changes and see a video of it in action.

We have listened to a lot of user feedback regarding how they manage shopping cart and order form settings. We conducted several usability studies in the past several months and observed how people set up their e-commerce settings and watch them struggle in frustration.

In these usability studies, we identified a few patterns and discovered where people were frequently stuck. This was a huge opportunity for us to address because we want our software to be easy and enjoyable to use.

One of the first things were they did not know how to get started – things were scattered and not grouped in a sensible, expected way.

We made some changes.

We sorted and grouped the settings in order of what they would want to do first. For instance we organized it by themes, product catalog (what you’re selling), how you want users to purchase and managing discounts and other small, but important things.

We also streamlined the navigation to make it easier to go back to previous pages. This will result in quicker setup and management of your ecommerce and shopping cart features.

Another piece of feedback we heard was about the uphill battle of configuring the backend of the storefront. As powerful as it was, it wasn’t easy. We’ve introduced a new way to manage categories and subcategories that is  later shown in the storefront. Now there’s in-line additions of new categories so it’s a one-step process. Drag and dropping categories has been improved to better organize your product offering on the storefront.

Finally, we have a new capability known as 3D Secure. This feature is what makes Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode possible for merchants. A number of our users utilize the SagePay/Protx merchant gateway, which now requires 3D-Secure authentication. The only thing these users need to do is verify 3D-Secure is established with their account. No other setup is needed!

With all these changes, it helps us make the ecommerce settings easier to manage. It’s on our roadmap to expand this to more merchant gateways as they require it in the future.  Our next approach on this will continue to improve and enable us to add more features that make our shopping cart more powerful.

With all that said, it wouldn’t be possible without your feedback. We want to hear your thoughts on the changes made. Specifically, do they make sense to you? This feedback is important so we can continue to make our ecommerce features easy to setup.

Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Update is great. Especially the drag and drop categories. However, it's a shame you didn't extend this feature to the product organization. It's still alphabetical and requires us to put A), B), C) in front of the product names in order to have them show up the way we want.

Also still looking for the ability to access the custom order fields inside the shopping cart like the person fields and not after the order has been placed.
