I have an amazing dad. He’s one of those people who genuinely cares about others, gives freely of his time and encourages people to be their best just by the way he is. When I was growing up, I took it for granted. I figured everyone had a father like that. As I became a teenager and began smacking into those challenges to self-esteem that most teens face, my dad tried to give me advice about how to cultivate a positive attitude. Unfortunately, I didn’t listen much.
As the years have passed, I’ve realized my dad’s advice (that fell on my deaf ears in those days) is one of the most important lessons to learn in life. His advice has become one of the primary drivers of our company’s success.
It has become one of the things I talk about all the time. In addition, it’s definitely one of the most appropriate things for entrepreneurs to incorporate in their lives… especially in times like these. Here’s what my dad taught me:
Thoughts lead to Words.
Words lead to Beliefs.
Beliefs lead to Actions.
Actions lead to Habits.
Habits lead to Goals.
Goals lead to Character.
Many of us know our thoughts tend to become reality. Nevertheless, my dad’s advice is great because it helps us STOP the destructive “thoughts-to-reality” and IGNITE the productive “thoughts-to-reality.”
I believe this process is one we should all practice in business and in life if we want to be happy.

An old friend once told me “what comes out of your mount is determined by what you put in your mind.” He was a student of Dr. Forrest Shaklee. I believe the quote came from one of Dr. Shaklee’s little books of wisdom. It serves as a great opening line to your father’s mantra.
