Giving Thanks

November 26, 2008 | by Adam Ross

Like many dads and husbands out there, I have the greatest family in the world. I have three beautiful children and an amazing wife who has supports and loves me (which is not always the easiest thing to do). I thought I would stray from my business-themed blogging to share with you one of the funniest things I have heard that came out of the mouth of my four year old.

Last week, my wife was driving the kids home from school and our four year old asked what Thanksgiving was about, she told him it was a special time of the year when we get to really thank God for everything he has given us. She then asked him what he was thankful for, in traditional four year old processing he sat there for a little bit thinking about what he wanted to say. The next thing that came out of his mouth was incredible.

He piped up and said, “Mommy, I know what I am thankful for, I am thankful for hot dogs.” She replied with “Hot dogs?” He rebutted, “Yes, hot dogs, I am thankful that I have all the hot dogs I need.”

With everything that is happening right now, it sometimes takes a four year old to put things in perspective. Too often, we run around worrying about everything, when we should be focusing on the simple things like hot dogs. It is easy for all of us to focus on the things that we want: the houses, the cars, the jewelry and the toys. But when you bring it all back to center, the most important thing is the health of our families and the ability to provide the essentials for them (even if those are hot dogs).

My family does not love me because I buy them things; they love me because I am there for them; I spend time with them and I protect them. The one thing you can give yourself and your family is to be there, just be there for them.

I am thankful I can be there for my family. As we all know when we are no longer on this earth, the people we leave behind will not be asking why couldn’t he have made more money; however they will wish they had more time to spend with us!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone, enjoy your families.

I appreciate the concern which is been rose. The things need to be sorted out because it is about the individual but it can be with everyone.

Looks like you had a fun time – love the pic of Lucy warming by the fire and Ben with his mighty swing! We are heading up north with 9 couples for two days. No little children to adore – and the comfort of a motel room. Different chapter.

    Sara,
The flowers are still looking pretty good and were lovely all week. The bars lasted about three hours – with restraint. Yummy! Many thanks. Love you all.
